Myths and legends

Myths and legends - using a coda or commentOutline of the activity
The teacher used a Powerpoint presentation to identify the features of Myths and legends and to give children ideas and instructions for writing their own. The children then drafted their stories on to the computer using Microsoft Word.

Skills Covered
The children followed the main points of the presentation making notes as appropriate. They were then able to plan, draft and create their own myths and legends using typical characters, plots and language features. They developed their imaginative writing skills and their use of the tools available in Microsoft Word—editing text, using the spell and grammar checks, adding word art and clip art.

Rationale
The teacher used a multimedia presentation on the features of myths and legends as a teaching tool, giving the children copies of the slides as a handout for them to make notes during the presentation. The use of a word processor enhanced the quality of the writing the children produced in response to the presentation.

Result
The children enjoyed the use of a multimedia slideshow as a result they produced high quality writing well matched to the purpose of the task. They were able to evaluate their work and also liked the fact they submitted their work to the teacher on disc, the teacher responding by adding comments and targets.
