Matthew Evans Assistant Head, Head of Sixth Form
Aled James Head of History Department, Deputy Head of Sixth Form
Four teachers WBQ tutors

Students

The Bac is part of life in the sixth form and every sixth form member participates in the course as well as the school’s Intermediate and Advanced courses.

Of special interest

The WBQ tutors also register the sixth form.

Three hours a week are timetabled for the Bac, with extra time allocated for mentoring and interviewing.

After the exams in the summer term, a month is dedicated to Welsh Bac activities. During this period, time is available to assess the Individual Investigation, for enterprise activities as part of the Language Module (see Resources), and to gather evidence for Key Skills.

Five days are set aside for PSE during the year.

All the Key Skills are woven into Bac activities.

Every student is expected to take advantage of the opportunities that are offered for community work. The school works closely with outside agencies such as CSV, Hills Forest Centre, Fairwater Community Centre  and Communities First. Each pupil is expected to attend one of the Wednesday afternoon clubs as an officer, eg dance, aerobics, chess, filming.

The Duke of Edinbugh scheme is available to all pupils to gather evidence for the silver award.

We are very aware of the need to offer a varied and interesting scheme, which will encourage pupils to achieve the qualification successfully, but which will also nourish and encourage specific skills for higher education and work. In presenting the Bac:

  • a number of guest speakers are invited – Cardiff Bay Harbour Authority, Mrs Betty Cambell (formerly head of Butetown Primary School), Mr Emyr Llewelyn, Communities First, representatives of the four main political parties in Wales.
  • a number of visits are arranged – Welsh Assembly, Cardiff Bay, Hills Forest Centre, Cowbridge. Loseleys Ice Cream company, Big Pit.
  • a number of team activities are arranged – a competition day for Working with Others and Problem solving, creating a film on Anglo-American influence on Cardiff, running a stand in a foreign language at our International Fair.

We did this...

  • Understanding politics
  • Social deprivation
  • Language week
